  • 500R Coil Wiring (Polarity)

    Hello All!

    Im doing my wiring now for the SM4 and the 500R with the MSD 8232 coils and i got a little bit confused…
    I was looking at the http://www.autronic.com.au/500R_DFCD...Wiring_v12.pdf and i see that the polarity between the CDI and Coils are swaped…
    In the text its saying that if I Use HEI coils they shall be swapped and the wiring diagram is made for CDI coils
    Im using 4x MSD 8232 CDI coils so with the text above I should swap the +ve and – ve to the cdi coil (+ve to coil - and -ve to coil+)…

    Or am i just missing something???

    I think the diagram is for HEI coils but that is not what Note 7 suggests.

      I have an idea that the msd output is negative wrt to ground. This will need to be verified.
      He gets his lap dogs to do his talking for him. Buzzard is a good example.

        Hello!
        As I understand they shall be wired same as the old "thunderbolt style" Mercury coil...
        "The coils shown in the invoice are an MSD 8232. This is MSD’s rebadged version of the updated Mercury Marine CDI coil. They are much less prone to damage than the older Mercury Thunderbolt style of coil shown on our website. Same spark energy as the older coils, just a lot more durable. This is the coil we recommend for use with any CDI ignition"
        From what I have read in the MSD page they shall be wired as a normal "blaster coil".

          Ok. The diagram is correct for HEI coils and at least some (if not all) CDI coils. The main office polarity tested an MSD Blaster 3 coil and reported it needs to be connected the same way as an HEI coil to obtain the normal spark polarity.

          So, at this stage, connect as per the diagram.

            Hmm still abit confused...

            i was in Contact with the seller and he told med to not change the polarity for the coils...
            Is there a good way to test the polarity of the spark?

            The Coil seams to be similar to the M&W unit...

            Can you recomend a diffrent coil that will work with the Autronic 500R ?

              Please standby whilst I study the effects of the coil primary/secondary phasing as shown in the M&W diagram.

                If the phasing of the coil given in the M&W document matches the phasing of the MSD 8232 coil, the polarity should not be reversed.


                Spark polarity can be determined using an oscilloscope and high voltage probe. It can also be determined using a graphite pencil. Due to the high voltages involved it IS NOT recommended that inexperienced persons attempt either method.
