  • Drive by wire

    Anyone know if there is any way to get the autronic SM4to run fly by wire/drive by wire with out buying another controller to run it?

    or if there is any news about autronic doing it? price of the box would equal cheaper for me to sell off and buy haltec or even a used motec.

    as far as I know you can't do that yet

      There is already a controller out. The whole idea is to have less boxes in the car.

      SM4,CDI. PDU and one of these. goal is less weight

      Anyone want to buy SM4 and 500r? looks like i will be going haltec

        The TF is not so good, have used it and is not up-to-date with security.

        I saw a picture of a small box from Autronic working in conjunction with the SM4, but has not been released.

        Many other brands do not take security as first priority, a high security means the drive-by-wire unit is totally separate from ECU with own processor ans so on. This is when new functions are added to the ecu it can interfere and make a bug in the drive by wire.

        So each function or bug corrected will lead to a long process of testing the drive by wire before it can be released.

        Going Motec or Haltech may get drive by wire but is a downgrade of the fundamental control of fuel and ignition.

          None of the current wire-in haltechs do DBW either (i think only some of their plug-in ecu's do but even then only with an extra DBW box).

          I'm not much of a fan of Haltech either but I must disagree about the motec comment. I have tuned both Autronic and Motec over many years and have no doubt that Motec's control is at least as capable and robust as Autronic.

            This is my opinion and not a fact M_brand uses look-up tables in a manner that the transient control can't be made as Autronic 1.09 and up.

            Also there are som differences in TPS/MAP mode between them.

            I have much concidence in Ben Strader EFI school, one customer called him last month and had a SM4 and no one could tune it there in US so he planned to get latest M-brand instead. Since this was an expensive car he would take the cost for that.

            He was quit shocked when Ben told him that going from a Sm4 1.09 some years old to latest M_brand was a downgrade

            So he decided to stay and contact someone that could tune the SM4

              I'll have to disagree. I have tuned a few MoTeC ECU's and a lot of Autronic ECU's. MoTeC is good system, but it has made it's legacy from it's strong promotional capability, which doesn't nearly match it's actual performance. Autronic is the opposite, sorely lacking in promotion, but exceptional in performance. A direct head to head would be no contest in both engine control and ease of tuning, with Autronic being easily ahead of MoTeC.

              Even with very limited advertising and promotion, Autronic has managed to remain as a well known system because of excellent performance. However without addressing the very serious concern of putting out a newer model which adds the much needed extra outputs, inputs and further functionality to meet modern day requirements, it's in danger of losing more and more of it's faithful customers.

                  I will not go stirring things up on this subject again since I respect Robert for running this forum and know a lot of this can all be very subjective and we all have our own thoughts.
                  I am certainly no motec poster boy either - I have my personal favourites but work with many others and normally choose the ECU based on what features the customer needs.
                  In this case the OP wanted an ECU that could do DBW without an extra box. Since he is in Australia I still think the M brand is probably his best option as it does DBW well and there are plenty of dealers/tuners there that know how to work one. If he was in Europe or USA, I would have probably recommended a couple of different options.

                    if I recall Vipec also supports DBW
                    I have sad experience with those, as I managed to burn the board on my rally car by trying to assign AL control to OEM AC button...

                      I think Vipec you needed another box but im not 100% sure as im going off the link ECU (pretty much what vipec copied from)

                      Other option is changed the TB setup and do some CNC work and design it to run normal cable.

                        Lack of DBW was a deal breaker for me. Autronic is a great system and I have nothing bad to say about it other than it is getting old and development is too ssslllooowwww...

                          Yeah it is started to look like Motec or new Haltec will be the go. Just due to support and development.

                          So if anyone is interested in a Autronic 500r and SM4 v1.08 let me know
