  • Autronic SM2 to '89 Mitsubishi Mirage Turbo patch harness help needed!

    Gentlemen,

Recently I purchased an '89 Mirage Turbo with a 2.0l 4G63 swap and wanted to use an old Autronic SM2 that has been sitting on my shelf for some time now. The pinouts for the Mirage are the same as a '90 Mitsubishi Eclipse and I have a pinout for that ECU, as well as the Autronic pinout schematic. I have begun working on a patch harness Excel spreadsheet document showing which pins line up with what other pins but have stalled out and can't figure out how to wire the CAS, the MPI relays, and a few others. In truth it's all suspect but I'd like to have someone more experienced take a quick look. Thanks for any and all your help, the link below has the ECU pinouts as well as the spreadsheet.!

Dwell control may be an issue here. Do you know what the SM2 was previously installed on? Are there any small labels on the lid of the ecu?

I have given the serial number to autronic and spoken with ray hall back when he still worked there, they assured me this unit was fine for my application, thanks for the heads up though. EDIT> To answer you more specifically though there are no labels on the ecu at all other than the Autronic sticker and serial stamped into the case, and the chip is v1.93!

Ray Hall, when he worked at Autronic; the ECU was previously installed on an AWD '95 Eclipse so a very similar application (2.0l 4G63 turbo)

Were the ignition modules changed in the previous application. My concern here is for your ignition modules/ignition coils. Connecting an ecu without dwell control and operating will let the smoke out. I believe in regard to your previous post, perception is 9/10 of reality.

Is the CAS rotatable? An SM2 has a fixed Cylinder Pulse Offset requirement of 60 deg while Mitsubishi ECU's normally use 75 deg. But 4G63 engines with the moveable CAS can be set to 60 deg to suit an SM2.

Ecu's with dwell control boards fitted typically had a small label with hand written annotation. You may opt to either continue with your current information, provided the full serial number so I can verify the information, or carefully remove the lid from ecu and provide a clear photo. The choice is yours.

I have conferred with Autronic. SM2 L1362T2A4 was not fitted with a dwell board from factory. It may have been dealer converted.

Fellas, thanks for your help. Originally this was on a 2.0l AWD Eclipse, then it was meant for a 2.3l 4G63 stroker car which Autronic sent me a cal for, and now it's going back on the old series 1 6-bolt / VR4 4G63 powered mirage. The ECU doesn't have a dwell board built into it but I do have a CDI unit to remedy this problem if need be. S/N L1362T2A4 I am unaware if the original car it was on had a CDI unit, but do know that I told Ray Hall that I was going to run one on the previous car this ECU was destined for so perhaps that was why he did not mention it.

Edit> I don't suppose you could confer with them and see if they have a schematic for this SM2 to go into either a '90 or '91-'94 Eclipse/Talon/Laser

You will need to use a CDI with the SM2

I have a few notes when i did my SMC to Galant VR4 (1G) plug in loom and now the SM4.
This is how i got mine working.

                        CAS:
1G PIN 22 (Crank angle sensor input) = AUTRONIC PULSE / Sync
1G PIn 21 (Top dead centre input) = AUTRONIC REF / Cylinder

1G Pin 56 (MPI Relay pin 7. Gnd this wire to turn on Fuel pump. This gives +12v to Fuel Pump) = AUTRONIC output to fuel pump
1G Pin 63 & 66 (MPI Relay Pin 8. Gnd these wires to turn on MPI - This gives +12v to EFI system) = AUTRONIC output to EFI system
1G Pin 110 (This goes to MPI -> Supplies +12v IGN power).

Let me know if you need more info. I have some hand written stuff with more detail i can share if you are still stuck.

                        Good luck.
