  • HSI - usages?

    Hi guys,

I'm wondering what the HSI can be used for.

    Ive used HSI3 for speed.
    I've got 1&2 free.

I'm thinking wheel speed sensors but I have AWD and will require 4 HSI inputs to do it properly otherwise I can do 1x front and 1x rear.

    Any suggestions?

Simple answer is that you can use them for switch inputs.

    Or...
Depending on what type AWD you have, you can connect them to, for example, the front left and right ABS sensors, and set up traction control if you have at least version 1.08 chip. Does not work with all types of AWD, but if you have a LSD center differential, and the transmission has the tendency to push either the front or rear wheels essentially more during heavy acceleration you can use traction control to limit the wheel slip to a degree that gives optimum acceleration.

Or, if you have a version 1.09 chip you can use the HSI inputs for a number of different applications that take in a speed, (or frequency), input, and make custom functions in GPC's. Sky is the limit.

    Some examples:

You can use a GPC to control an active center differential lock percentage depending on front/rear axle speed. You cold also connect lateral and longitudinal G-sensors and use that also in the control of the center differential.

If you have an automatic transmission you can measure torque converter shaft speed and control lockup from that.

You can mount a turbine speed sensor on the turbo, to log turbine speed.

You could use for example a Greddy Type-R dump valve to regulate boost pressure by shunting off excess compressed air, and then regulate turbine speed to its optimum using a GPC to control the wastegate. Or variable vanes if you have such an exotic turbo.

Another exotic application would be to balance twin turbos depending on turbine speed, by having two GPC's to regulate the two wastegates based on wanted boost level and the two turbine speed signals.

To be yet more exotic, you could build a hyperbar chamber to keep optimum turbo speed on a huge turbo even with a very small cc engine, by connecting an airflow meter, (that in most cases output a frequency corresponding to a certain airflow), and meter the fuel required for the injectors to the hyperbar chamber. Just set up a fuel map for the hyperbar chamber in one of the GPC's.

Just some examples. As i said - Sky is the limit.

All those examples sound good, but I have a mechanical constant AWD vehicle with a locked center diff.

I was considering the turbo speed sensor, but does this require the turbo to actually be modified?

I may just have to use them as on/off switches.

Can they be used as analogue type inputs at all?

I don't believe they can be used as analogs (unless you somehow hardware converted an analog signal into frequency and did something clever in software??) but I have my rear speed on HSI3 as you do, and am now using HSI2 for my WOT switch. It was explained to me that SW inputs are only sampled every so often, where HSI's are sampled every x milliseconds, therefore if you're using a time-sensitive switch input, it should be on HSI if you've got one spare.

Not as exotic as some of Johan's suggestions, but something. ;-)

As others have noted, lack of analog inputs and HSI's (along with lack of memory for logging ;-) is the main limitation of the SM4, and is the reason we will all lust after the SM5 and try to convince ourselves we need the extra functions when it comes out some day.... :-)

        Cheers
        Steve

Garrett sells a complete kit that comes with an installation instruction that tells you where and how to drill in the compressor housing to mount the sensor. The kit includes a controller that produce a divide by eight blade count that can be input on HSI1 and HSI2 on the SM4.

You can also look at micro epsilon or picoturn speed sensor setups for high quality turbo speed sensor.

              Hi There,

I was just testing the inputs to the sm4 and noticed that open circuit = 1 and closed (to gnd) = 0.

If I invert this, nothing changes.
I'm using this on a clutch switch ..

I'd like it to be the opposite.

1= activate ignition cut / launch control
              0 = normal

              Or does it not matter?

              Thanks..

                For what reason?

Just to align with the outputs where 1 is on and 0 is off.

Question is , is this normal?

Think so, and it is of very little relevance.

I was playing with the slope function and noticed hsi in there also.

So as long as it detects a pulse it will trigger.
Pulse being in my case pull to gnd.
