  • Vanos Cal file for bmw m3 s54b32

    Hello i run sm4 v1.09-5 on my s54b32 today, i run it with vanos block and turbo.i have 950hp, but i will try to use vanos on this engine, is it anyone who have a cal file thay have use the vanos on s54 engine so i can start with?

      Yes i will try to make a scope for you Ian, but i have the engine in peaces now so i have to see if i can find a old file a have... If not i have to take a new scope when the engine is complete my vanos have 4 solenoids do you know how i shall wire this up to my sm4 ? Hsi1 and 2 will i use for the cam triggers right?. I dont know how mutch amps the solenoids need so i hope someone have use vanos on bmw engines on sm4 somewhere round the world thank you for answering me

        Samvel in Estonia has done a S50B32 and is similar to your engine with four valves.
        He used PWM1&PWM2 for intake cam and OP7&OP5+OP6 to handle the current.

        I would recommend using an external H-Bridge controller that will handle the current and save OP from Sm4. Meaning you can use PWM1 & 2 for cam control and also get better resolution.

          takk for svar mrm do you know if it is possible to get in contact with samvel? he maybe knows how mutch amps the solenoids need... i can made custom triggerpattern on my cams if that is easier.....

            Raimond. As I have done double-vanos setup, with a lot of help from Ian, i can encourage You that it is doable
            But, as Ian said, scopelog of Your engine triggers is essential. I am pretty sure it will be much easier to setup with simplified cam trigger patterns, so You`d have 60-2 and single pulses on both cams.
            For setting up vanos valves You will have to verify s50 and s52 wiring diagrams. On s50 i remember i had to modify wiring of vanos valves too.

              I'm trying to do this as well, but I don't see any available setup options to use 2 outputs per cam to control them. I have a cyl/sync/hsi log to help.

                To use 2 outputs per cam you select the output as H-bridge in the first column. Then in the next column you select the bridge setup then the physical pins.

                The attached cal shows the config. I don't recall that the Cyl & Sync pattern has been confirmed or the Cam Offset angles configured.

                In the cam solenoid plugs you must remove the diodes.

                          I believe the S54B32 has Hall/Gear tooth cam sensors so a reluctor interface should not be needed.

                            I'll be having a go at this car on the dyno this week...Ill let you know how it comes out. Is there any write up about how to set up the cam offsets for the vanos? I looked through the manual and saw no mention of it.

                              Leave the Cam solenoids unplugged when you first start the engine and note the Cam positions with the engine idling. If you happened to degree the cam positions at engine assembly you can then change the offsets to display the correct positions.

                              If the cams have not been degreed then check if the cam travel limits are specified in the service manual (they are in some of the manuals). If they are specified I would be inclined to connect the intake solenoid and drive the intake retarded then set the offset to match the retarded position with the specification. After that do the exhaust but drive it advanced. That way the cams are driven to minimum overlap.

                              Once you have the Offsets you can then do the Adapts.
