Hi all
I have an SM4 with CDI for my Supra and I was wondering if the computer is able to protect the engine if it starts getting too hot?
If it does have this functionality would any tuner that is familiar with it be able to set the computer up so it places the engine in a protection type mode?
Thanks in advance

What type of protection do you want, less timing, more fuel, lowered rev limit, all three, engine shutdown?

Seeing that you are in Canberra, call over and see Ed Lee at Autotech .

Can the Autronic shutdown the engine if it gets too hot, I would have thought that would be too dangerous. Loss of power steering, brakes etc...
I was thinking more of removing most of the power to give the driver enough time to react to noticing that something is wrong. This is for when you're on the track as you won't be looking at gauges all the time.
Thanks for the heads up, I'll give Autotech a call as well.

I just called Ed Lee to give him a heads up, we can add a bit of fuel, pull a bit of timing and turn a light on on the dash. That ought to be enough.

Thanks for that I'll try and give him a buzz on the weekend.
But basically that will work if engine temps get a bit on the hot side? Would you be able to give me an indication of what the engine will do? Will this put it into a limp mode type status?
Thanks again.

Like I said before, we can reduce the rev limit, retard the ignition slightly, increase the fuelling and turn on a warning light. What else do you want from the "limp mode type status"?

Sorry I totally missread your other reply and noticed that I repeated myself. I'll have a chat to Ed on the weekend and hopefully he can set me straight.
Thanks again for your help.

As Chris stated the Sm4 can do what you want. The Sm4 is so flexible it can do most what you want but it needs to be set up correctly. As previous posts you can set up it to reduce timing, reduce rev limit, reduce boost, increase fuel, turn on a check engine lamp.....but all things need to be setup.
Some functions are there but still needs to be set up like the fuzzy logic on the map sensor. If the mapsensor would brake or come loose during driving it will go into LIMP-HOME-MODE. But you have to set up the limphome table since tps will act as reserve if this happens. Most other systems will only read zero load/boost and engine failure will happen....so it will do most you want if setup properly, so visiting a good tuner can save the engine..

So if I'm at WOT and temperatures reach unsafe, I'm guessing this would be an instant reaction (reduce timing, reduce rev limit, reduce boost, increase fuel, turn on a check engine lamp) when temperatures reach the unsafe?
Sorry for the questions but I'm trying to understand more about this aspect of the SM4.

As Chris stated, no! It must be done some programming to make it happen...then it will do what you have programmed.

i programmed my sm4 to cut rpm and boost if it overheats, i also set it up so it wil cut rpm if boost excedes a set level(saved me once when wg hoses got damaged)
I also used the rpm limit/temp and boost setup to make sure it is not possible to thrash it with a cold engine.. the more automatic safeguards, the better.

As stated you can set many safeties into the sm4. It is pretty easy to do. If you need help post up your cal.
