Does anyone have a fix for lack of connectivity with the tuning computer? I know this topic was "flogged to death" on the old forum. I thought this was a issue I had gotten past, unfortunately I'm wrong.

What I'm talking about is my laptop (2 different ones and 2 different cables) won't always connect with the ECU when I'm saving the changes to the file in the ECU. I make the changes, Press F5, the software asks if I want to save it to the ECU, I hit enter (yes) and then...it hangs! I've added the data in the "target" box (C:\AUTRONIC\ECU\ECUCAL.EXE D=9600 M=50 (this last # is variable)) in the properties for the software. I think it's suppose to slow the rate of the data exchange, if I remember right, but it still hangs at about 78-82% completion.

Any thoughts please, it's very frustrating when your trying to make changes between rounds and the computer won't complete the task.

Thanks!

Aer you using a USB adatper or RS232?

If the ECU and PC connect ok except for ECU stores then you don't have a connectivity problem. What you possibly have is EEROM problem as the PC is waiting for the ECU to "burn" the confirmed values from RAM into EEROM but it gets to a bad memory address and keeps trying and you get your hang. I don't think SMC/2 firmware or software has a timeout error.

In any case it is quite important that the ECU is inspected as a bad (intermittent) write can also mean that the same memory address could read bad.

Robban, I'm using the USB connection.

Thank you Ian, I'll contact my dealer and look into the ECU inspection.

I have this trouble quite often with my SMC when using a USB to serial converter. Mostly connects fine and reads from ECU but rarely if ever can I save to ECU. However, all works 100% fine tho with my old laptop that has a rs232 port. I suspect my usb converter (and yours) is crap.
Have you got another PC (even a desktop) that you can try first?

Hi Adam,
Thanks for your comments. I always have 2 laptops and 2 cables with me when I'm at the track. Unfortunately I learned the hard way when my only cable at the time was severed in the door accidentally. So now I carry "two and two". ;)

I'm using one of the USB/RS232 adapters that were mentioned on the old forum (I don't remember the manufacturer now, I've had it awhile) and are suppose to be "bullet proof". The adapter cable is the only common link though, so I'd have to say you're probably on the right track here. I do still plan on having the ECU checked as well.

Does anyone know of a good PCMCIA card that will supply a RS232 jack? I know they're out there, but does anyone have first hand experiance with one they can recommend?

The USB mentioned earlier is the brand ATEN, for the SM4 software you have to set filecal properties comm power to high. But for the SMC sofware this is not available.
