hi, all!
are there any idea for knock control for sm4?

The knock control is getting closer all I can tell.
Talk to your dealer about getting traction control, it is available in limited quantity's and should be installed by the dealers.

Why TC is limited? Is it just firmware chip upgrade for current boxes?

Will knock and traction work together? I already have traction 1.09 (cost $100 Australian installed). Will the knock add any more inputs / outputs as there is not many left on my set up.
Thanks.

From what Ray told me years ago, the knock board will be another circuit board that will slide in above the sm4, there will be two inputs on a new back plate of the ecu. This may have changed of cause ?

Knock board is still in development. I don not expect it to be released until it is perfect. Perfection

i have purchased a Link - KNOCK LINK unit.
It is an LED displayed knock sensor.
I was thinking of wiring the KNOCK LED to an input on the AUTRONIC which I can then get the ecu to retard ignition or boost cut.
Do you guys think this will be okay?
The KNOCK LINK sensitivity can be adjusted via a screw adjustment on the unit.
It utilised a bosch knock sensor.
What do you guys think?

It can be done, if I would go for a knock unit before Autronic has this available I would by the Vampire kit from John http://www.jandssafeguard.com/

You can take an output from the knocklink to monitor knock but its no good for controling it.
I use my knocklink like this and it works geat for finding were the knock was when datalogging.
I would hold off spending big money untill the Autronic knock module is released.

I read a while back that there was development on an ION sensing implementation for Autronic.
Is that going to be one of the features on the Knock board ?

yeah thats right i allso read that in a book by the author ben strader and there whas a several EFI system that he explains and discuss a whole lot of it functions and so on . how ever in that book when they discuss about SMC and the release of the new SM4 at the time so the SM4 would be able to have knock detection via ION sensing they said in the book ,,,,,just to mension maby its really on the way i hope so

I would like for someone to spill some beens on some details. As far as i know it will use Knock sensors(up to two of them) with the connectors on a new back plate of the ecu.
Its taking its time thats for sure but so is the website and manuals
Sounds like Autronic need more staff to me.

Yes. I don't like the idea of knock control shunting down ignition by 6 degrees then leave it there. Would give horrendous exhaust gas temperatures.
And knock is detected as a general engine noise above a certain mapped level. Could be noise from a loose heater plate on the exhaust header, WOT shifting with a sinter clutch, or any other noise source on the engine.
Still, it is some degree of knock control that give a bit of protection. Tested it, and it works. Have to give that to LINK.
But individual cylinder knock control that dynamically asess knock free ignition level per cylinder through measuring only in the knock window on a crank revolution, and also performes enrichment, as well as control boost level, (like the origin TPC system from SAAB does), is much more interesting to have.

Whilst knock board development continues, I have been advised that knock boards are now available to suit Subaru. For pricing or other information consult your local dealer.

Lets hope something makes it to market soon while SM4 is still current technology.

Knock boards are available for Subaru and Mitsubishi. They are in use by many tuners.
Excellent control for these engines. In my experience a knock board has improved power and torque in every instance .

Will be the need for a big demand for each application or a more universal model is in developpement ?

There are available a knockboard for the Sm4, it is the calibration that suits Subaru & EVO.

Ok so there is a knock board avaliable for sm4...
Calibrations only to suit subaru wrx & mitsubish evo
Any other models or an calibration / knock module that the end user can tune - to suit different engines etc...
Calibration variable to ignore mechanical noise etc...
Frequency adjustment etc...

If you speak to your dealer there are possibilities to do a cal for a special car, I know SeaDoo has SM4 and knockboard and I plan the Volvo 5 cyl engine.

Ok, So i did some ringing around today &...
Knock Control is avaliable for the following
- Mitsubishi - EVO
- Subaru - WRX
- Ford - XR6 Turbo
- Kawasaki - Jetski
- Seadoo - Jetski
But no V8's as yet & no plans for the near future...
Are more than willing to do it if somebody is paying for it - but costly at over 1K to data log an engine + then they still have to sit down Actually write the calibration for it !!!
Bugger :(

Im still hoping some sort of Knock Control Module becomes available to suit a 2JZ-GTE. Fingers crossed.
Have to let my mate know its available for his XR6 Turbo as he needs a replacement ECU instead of the flashed factory unit he currently runs.
Big fan of the SM 4 just after a little more safety so I can push the tune a little harder.

Hizoku, have you tried looking at the autronic dealers list? Who have you tried? I use springy motors and they know their Autronics!
On topic, they just did some testing on the new sr20det knock board with Richard and achieved some fantastic results! I'll post up a dyno graph shortly but overall increase by about 10-20kws at the wheels across the rev range!

What is involved in writing a knock board cal?
And is it a dealer only thing or end user also?
Just trying to get a better understanding.
Thanks

We need sound recordings in a sweep from idle to RPM limit from the knock
sensor and SM4 tacho pulse at No-Load and Medium load at least. The
recordings need to be in Wav format (PCM, 44.1 kHz, 16 bit, stereo) and need to be accurately scaled, preferably confirmed with an oscilloscope.
If the knock sensor is directly connected to a sound card then we also need to know the resistance of the sound card input. There must NOT be any clipping of the recorded signal and any AGC (Auto Gain Control) in the soundcard must be disabled.
As the sound cards generally have 1v inputs there will need to
be a pot on the input. That can be used to scale the input so we need to
know the value set on the pot also.
A good choice of card is Creative Labs USB Sound Blaster S80490 sound card and Roxio Creator 9XE software.

Here is the knockboard testing dyno run on an SR20.
I didn't look through all of the runs but these were two clean runs that I found on the dyno computer.
I was told that ignition trims on each cylinder were fine tuned in order to achieve equal knock on all cylinders at the same time.
Mighty impressive imo!
I'm hoping to do the same on my 4g63 (early model).
Hopefully the current 4g63 knockboard will be compatible!

I can't remember but does your engine have a variable intake cam? If so it looks like the switching point to retard is too early in the rpm range.

looking at using BENINCA for everything autornic and prob chasers to do the tune it self Maybe even use beninca will see what they have to say

Fair enough mate.
I haven't had any had issues with them at all.
I youf plan to stick with autronic, I advise autronic dealers only simply because they are not like other ecus (can be quite difficult to setup and tune if you don't know the software).

As an FYI... John at JandSSafegaurd.com has agreed to do a ugrade to his "Intercepter" box to support the SM4 muxed output. This will allow those of us that run big V8s with M&W PRO-18c or posibly other muxed CDI boxes to have full sequential, individual cylider nock control. The upgrade (firmware) should be availible latter this month.
And yes, we would love to have it in the SM4 but the odds of having a map done for some of these one off motors is probably not good...
