This cal shows the H-bridge setup to drive the 2-solenoid Single Vanos.

Note: the cam wheel has 8 teeth which doesn't suit the 6 Trigger events per cycle. For this cal the cam wheel was converted to 6 teeth so the cam offset parameter will not apply to other installations. The divide by 8 option has not been tried. Also conversion to 2 teeth with divide by 3 would have been an easier option.

When setting up variable cam timing make sure that a cam pulse cannot crossover the crank pulse that is defined by the Cylinder I/P lead angle. If this happens the cam control will think it is way out of position and push the cam to the end of it's travel and generate an error and possibly bent valves.

Ian,

I think we are many that would "Love" to have a basic setup guide for camshafts!;)

SM4 1.09 S50B30 Euro

Setup a)
Crank: Original reluctor + 60-2
Cam: Original reluctor, one pulse/one cam rev
Cam vanos sensor HSI1: original reluctor + reluctor interface, original 8 teeth

Cam degrees didn't work because trigger events per cycle integer. -ve edge/8 can't be used since rel interface needs +ve edge.

Setup b)
Cam vanos sensor: aftermarket hall, original 8 teeth wheel, -ve edge/8

Everything works except cam position changes/may change when starting up engine. Offset 30 is ok sometimes, sometimes 60 and sometimes 120. Because cam teeth 8/720=90deg, it's strange why +-30deg is needed sometimes. One teeth at crank is 360/60=6deg. No HSI1 errors.

It seems one tooth setup is needed. I've used that successfully with S50B32 and S54B32. S50B30 original 1 tooth/cam rev can't be used as a feedback because it moves with crank, not with cam. Understand that 2 or 3 teeth should also work.

Anything that could be tested with setup B before disassembling the engine and going to setup C (one teeth)? Cam/crank pulse crossover problem?

Ian has a custom cal file. I have S50B30 Euro (Australia) working with eight tooth trigger. Do you have the custom cal file from Ian?

Ah, OK, read your post fully. Divide by 8 is not for cam . Contact Ian.
